The worst kind of fat.īut of course, the best tip I can give is to start writing.
PLACE TO WRITE ORIGINAL FICTION FULL
I would also recommend Betsy Lerner's The Forest for the Trees as it talks a lot about what it's like being a writer and how we're all fat and ugly and full of self-doubt. I've seen a few pages of it and I'm considering getting it myself. I don't have Wonderbook myself, but it comes highly recommended by professors in my writing program. King touches on a lot of aspects of writing, like narrative flow, sentence structure, lots of things that you only really think about after you've written a bunch. I have On Writing, it certainly lives up to the hype.

*goes back to jotting down notes for book 12 :P*Īnd because I can, we do have a writing discord serverĬlick to shrink. That 1-2 punch, goddamn. There is really nothing but misery awaiting anyone writing a giant epic series. It's also a pain in the ass to rewrite the early novels multiple times over, and keep track of everything, and takes so long to write it. You have to remember that typically what you read isn't someone's first draft but a version of a story that has been gone over multiple times to be made better.Īnd then you write and practice more to hone that skill. but that's fine that's what multiple drafts and editing are for. You accept that your first draft of any story will likely be trash. it's scary, but helpful.Ĭan be a great resource for this, and if you request to have your flaws pointed out you will likely get them pointed out so you can know more what to focus on.īut then you continue reading resources to improve,īut you practice and write and write and write. Get feedback on your writing from people who aren't your close friends and family. (note, those who know me on the writing discord know that I actually suck a ton at this step as I don't read nearly as much as I should lol) you can emulate that as you figure out your own voice. You also should read plenty of fiction and figure out what you like about certain authors/books, AND STEAL IT!!!!!!!!!!! I'm not saying steal their ideas, but the way they describe things, the way they structure their stories ect. I also recommend that step is sooner rather than later so you can start to figure out areas that you realize that you absolutely need to learn from.

You can absorb resources all you want, but like any skill no matter how much you read about how to do it before hand the biggest part is eventually sitting down and practicing. People have a lot of different approaches, so ultimately do what works best for you! If you try to carefully apply ink or paint right off the bat, not only will you take a lot more time to write, but when you finish and find that certain elements structurally don't work or make sense, you will agonize to get rid of them or rework them.Īnyway, best of luck and I hope this helps you get started. It's great if you can get beautiful lines down the first pass, but you're going to be erasing the excess later. Think of the first draft as sketch lines on a canvas. It's fine for the first few passes to be shit.
PLACE TO WRITE ORIGINAL FICTION PROFESSIONAL
Most professional writers will go back and rewrite. Many would-be writers stop early because they can't get the words out or they think their prose is shit when they compare it to professional works. I can't stress this one enough: Don't agonize over perfect prose or words the first time. Even 20 minutes a day can net you good progress over time.Ĥ. If you have a job and kids like me, it's not so easy. People who say you should write 2000 words a day usually have a good 4 hours to do it. Everyone wants hours to sit down and focus. Sometimes, as the characters you write come to life, they will even tell you what you want to know.ģ. A bit of planning can help, but a lot of times, the answers come as you write more. Read a lot, especially in the genres you're most interested in.Ģ.
